Roof Configurations

We have extensive experience installing and repairing commercial roofing systems:

  • Low-Slope Roofs (or Flat Roofs), for buildings such as warehouses and shopping centers. Materials most often used with this roofing system include EPDM, PVC, and TPO (described below).
  • Steep-Slope Roofs, which are more often seen in residential design but are sometimes used for commercial buildings as well. Materials used for these roofs include metal, asphalt, or fiberglass shingles, slate, or tile.

Types of Roofing Systems

Following are some of the commonly used systems we install as part of a re-roofing or new roof installation:

  • Built-up Roofing—Also called “BUR,” this is a layered roofing system for low-slope roofs that has been in use for more than a century. The installation can consist of one to five layers (“single-ply,” “double-ply,” etc.), depending on the strength required for the particular project. Each additional layer enhances weather protection and energy efficiency.
  • Modified Bitumen (Mod-Bit or MB) Roofing—This system is used for low-slope roofs and is made of asphalt that has been chemically modified to achieve the consistency of rubber or plastic, making it highly flexible. It adapts to the material underneath it and can be covered with other materials, such as metal or gravel. In use in the U.S. since the 60s, mod-bit is resistant to storm damage and extreme temperatures, giving it long-term durability.
  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)—This thermoset material is also known as “rubber roofing,” as it is made of synthetic rubber compounds. Cost-effective and able to withstand UV and ultraviolet rays, EPDM is widely used for low-slope buildings.
  • TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin)—This material is a reinforced plastic polymer sheet that can be shaped when heat is applied. It contains UV stabilizers and is flame-retardant. TPO is most often used for low-slope roofs.
  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)—PVC’s dependability makes it a popular choice for low-slope roofs. The material’s thermoplastic nature is highly reflective and resists weathering, fire and punctures.
  • Shingles—Types include fiberglass laminate (architectural) shingles, asphalt shingles, wood shakes, slate and metal.
  • Metal roofs—This attractive roofing material can be used on both low-slope and steep roofs. It offers greater durability and a longer lifespan than the traditional shingle roof.
  • Coating systems—Coatings consist of a flexible membrane, applied as a fluid, that helps reduce energy consumption, provides added leak protection and extends the life of your commercial roof. Most are made of acrylic and silicone.
  • Tile—Clay and concrete tile.
  • Fluid Applied—A liquid-applied roofing system is comprised of multiple components that come together to form a fully adhered, seamless, and self-flashing membrane.
